*Ocean Conservancy's work benefits sharks in several important ways. We continue to seek improvements to the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act that will make all marine fisheries in the United States, including those for sharks and their prey, more sustainable. In 1996 and 2006, those efforts resulted in new legal mandates for management measures that ensure overfishing does not occur and that depleted populations are rebuilt to healthy levels.

Today, Ocean Conservancy's advocacy efforts focus, in particular, on ensuring functioning food webs in the ocean and resilient ecosystems through advocating for the adoption of an ecosystem approach to the management of our ocean and all marine life. Such an approach recognizes the vital role that sharks play in maintaining a healthy balance in the ecosystem, and it recognizes the need to restore populations of sharks and other top ocean predators.
